Amore Italia 2 - What about the Da Vinci Code??
Friday, May 19, 2006 What about the Da Vinci Code??
Buon giorno or buona sera, amici,
The movie is out now and it will be interesting to see what the result is from all of the hype and media marketing strategies. The local newspaper here has panned it but says that it does open the channels of communication. Since I haven't yet seen it, I will reserve comment except to say that anything that directs our attention to art and religion and talking about the sites mentioned within Dan Brown's book is a good thing. As a former art history educator who once assigned this book as one of several choices for required outside reading in my class, I often found that my students enjoyed this book so much that they claim that it brought them back to reading books rather than text messaging, talking on the cell phone, and listening to their Ipods. If Dan Brown has brought attention to reading as a pleasurable pursuit such as that of JK Rowling for the tweens, then the controversy about the book should be downplayed and the attention focus of the media should be praising the fact that something can replace the X-boxes and other millennia media that has replaced the wondrous content of the written word on the page. Why bring religion into it? Why not focus upon the art and the introduction of culture to an impatient visually illiterate majority of tomorrow's future leaders? I could go on and on but won't. I do , however, choose to praise rather than condemn.
